What an amazing book! I received this book as a gift for Christmas 2022 and I must say it was an awesome read βΊοΈ. The story of the mermaid π§ββοΈ of Black Conch made you happy, it made you smile, it made you sad, it made you want to shed a tear. Life really could sometimes just be so unfair! Overall, I rate this book 4/5 and I highly recommend it especially if you are into Trinbagonian / Caribbean π΄ literature.

The story of the mermaid π§ββοΈof Black Conch was a riveting, heartbreaking, enjoyable story of a beautiful young woman, Aycayia, who was banished to the sea to live forever as a mermaid by the women in her village. One day, this beautiful mermaid with a powerful, massive tail was captured by fishermen β΅οΈ in the waters off Black Conch and she was then rescued from her captors by a fisherman named David. When on land π, Aycayia began to turn back into a woman and life for her and her new found friends began to change for the better, at first.
Some of the key themes that were brought out in this book were friendship, love, trust and jealousy. If you are not from the Trinidad and Tobago or the Caribbean however, you may not get all of the local dialect and phrases however, you will still enjoy the story π. Have you read this book already? What did you think of it if you have?
Much Love,
Celly
I think I’d like this book. I love reading Caribbean literature, but I’m afraid I haven’t read any Caribbean books outside of Jamaican ones in years! The last Trini novel I can remember reading is A Wine of Astonishment.
