My thoughts at the end of Chapter 1 …”but what the jail is this bwoi” what madness is going on here??? !!! lol π. This book had me fully invested from Chapter 1, Lisa Agostini had me stressed. Althea girl! π€―What is this??????????? There was so much going on in those first 14 pages….I just knew that this was going to be a quick read and a good book and I was down for it π₯°
Kai Miller in his short review of this book said ‘You dip into the first page and don’t come up for breath until the last…thoroughly enjoyable.” I couldn’t agree more π.
The Bread π The Devil Knead was one of those books that you cannot put down. You are racing through the chapters trying to see what happens next and each and every twist of the story has you hooked. If you start this book, you are surely going to complete it. I lent my coworker this book and she finished it in four days π.

The Bread π the Devil Knead tells the story of Althea aka Girlie π§ as she navigates life and adulthood π©βπ¦°. Althea is in an abusive relationship and she knows it but she still struggles to see herself as a victim and to remove herself from the situation. Through the chapters we see that she has had a lifetime of abuse from different people from the time she was a girl to present day, it is almost as thou it is just familiar to her and not really a big deal π.
What I learned from this book π‘:
- You are never too old for a second chance or a third or fourth if you need it.
- Sometimes you need to trust that the persons who have your best interest at heart. It is also, important to be able to recognize these types of people in your life.
- Sometimes God just needs to see that you are willing to put in the work for Him to make a way for your breakthrough. God is able. It is just like the saying, you can’t be praying to God to win the lotto but never buy a ticket.

What I loved most about this book π was the writing style and the fact that it was set in Trinidad and Tobago. I love local literature, especially when I can visualize the places that are referenced in the story. For example, when the author spoke about Althea working in βTownβ or living on LβAnse Mitan Road in Carenage, I know these places; I know the vibes, the sights, and the sounds of these areas. It helps bring the story to life for me.π.
Also, I love a book where just randomly on a line on one of the pages you see the title of the book… I always love when authors do that π. The official term for this is called a ‘Title Drop” and it is one of my favorite literary techniques.

Overall, I thought this was a great book, and my Celly rating is 8/10. This book brought out a lot of emotions while I was reading it; at times I felt upset and angry π‘ and was quarreling with Girlie over some of her decisions, other times I felt sad, and then reflective and even hopeful for the future π.
Have you read this book already? What were your thoughts on The Bread π the Devil Knead by Lisa Allen-Agostini?
Much Love,
Celly
