Book Review: The Pillars of the Earth ๐Ÿ•- Ken Follett (Kingsbridge series #1)

What a book โ—๏ธโ—๏ธHonestly, this is much longer than the books I normally read however, this one held my interest and turned out to be a very riveting read, I am glad I completed it. Overall I will rate Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett as a 7.5 / 10 ๐Ÿ˜. Thank you to my coworker Donna for gifting me this book for Christmas 2022.

The Pillars of the Earth is a wonderful, entertaining, gripping story of the building of a church ๐Ÿ• in Kingsbridge, England in a historic war time period of the Middle Ages. The story is well written as it highlights the lives of all the people involved in the process of the building of the church: – the master builder – Tom Builder,๐Ÿ‘ท๐Ÿ‘ทโ€โ™‚๏ธ and his family, the Prior of the church – Prior Phillip and the other monks, the villagers and also all the people who did not want this beautiful church to be built at this location – William Hamleigh and The Bishop Waleran Bigrod.โ€‚There are so many layers to this story and I appreciated the fact that it was broken into 6 parts in different time periods. Honestly, this could have been three separate books ๐Ÿ“š (I know there are other books to this series) but even this book ๐Ÿ“–could have been split into several smaller books and I would have enjoyed it all the same.

The building of this church ๐Ÿ• and all of the ups and downs that Prior Phillip went through in his lifetime with this project, really is a testament to how life is, there are good times ๐Ÿ˜Š and there are bad ๐Ÿ˜ญ and sometimes you question whether good ever really triumphs over evil ๐Ÿ˜ถ when you see evil people succeeding in their schemes. The building of this church in Kingsbridge was a true test of faith for all involved as the devil ๐Ÿ‘นnever stopped working against it.

Kingsbridge Series is now a five part book ๐Ÿ“š series with the other book titles World Without End (book 2), A Column of Fire (book 3), The Evening and the Morning (a prequel to the Pillars of the Earth, book 4) and The Armour of Light (book 5). I look forward to eventually reading all of the books in this series, maybe one a year thou. LOL ๐Ÿ™‚. Have you read this series or any other books by Ken Follett? What are your thoughts on his books?

Much Love,

Celly

  1. This book has been on my TBR list for years and years, since my professor mentioned it in class (medieval history). Iโ€™m pretty sure World without End was turned into a TV series a few years ago. Great review!

      1. Fascinating step into the medieval era. You definitely get the flavor of the time period, the difficulty of life, human ingenuity and the the ugliness of evil. I’ve been in many of the cathedrals in England, so imagining the process was delightful.

  2. One of my favorite KF books, and I have almost every book of this author. I read it a few times, many, many years ago and still love it, I may pull it off the shelf and read it again. The film adaptation, I also have isnโ€™t bad either!

  3. The Pillars of the Earth is my all time favorite book. Reading the book as an Atheist, I liked all the politics and lies this book exposed religion to be. I sent a copy to a Catholic ex-monk, he viewed it a a confirmation of his faith. Everyone should read this book.

    1. Jesus Christ also exposed the religion of his day and they killed him for it. I agree that religion is not the answer…but God is my greatest joy!
