How much time do you spend on your phone?

“Log off, Shut Down, Go outside”

So, the other day I was listening to a You Tube post by Matt D’Avella where he talked about  his experience after quitting social media for 30 days (a link to this video is below). As expected, he found that he had more time during the day and he was more productive and focused with whatever task he set out to do. After listening to this video however, I began to wonder, how much time do I really spend on my phone and how much of this time is spent using social media apps? To be honest I assumed it was maybe 1 hr or 1.5 hrs at most. Boy was I in for a rude awakening! :/

Phone usage and  Addiction Level

I downloaded an Android App called YourHour to track my phone usage. There are many others available including: Screen Time, Phone Usage Monitor, Quality Time, Offtime or My Phone Time (some of which actually allow you to limit your use of the more distracting apps like Twitter, Instagram and Facebook). On my first full day of using the app I spent 4 hrs 10 mins and the next day 5hrs 1 min on my phone. I mean there are no words to describe this…it is ridiculous!

But, I  continued checking and stuck with the app and I am now able to see plainly how much time I am spending on my phone in hours and minutes and also how many hours of the day I use each app (not how much time I think I am spending). It has been a sobering experience for me and I try to not allow my usage to go beyond 3 – 3.5 hrs, which I still think is a lot. What do you think? Is 3.5 hrs a lot of time spent on your phone?

Before seeing this video by Matt D’Avella, I had underestimated by phone usage by more than 50%. YourTime has forced me to cut down the amount of time I while away scrolling on IG or FB watching UNILAD videos or dog videos or memes. I have not stopped this completely, because I really love UNILAD videos or dog videos, but just instead of wasting 1 hr of my day doing this, I may spend 10 mins. I have become more mindful about how I occupy the time I have during the day. That is what I have learned from this experience.

How much time do you think you spend on your phone? Are you willing to check and see?

PS. Check out the video by Matt that sparked my interest on this topic!

Much Love,

      2. YESS!! I waste so much time doing that!! It feels good to have cut back though. Working on my blog is what’s been a distraction for me to stay off of FB and the other socials lol!

  1. 🙂 I an in the “Champion” status.

Last year, I made the decision to use a minute amount of apps on my Android smartphone (I settled for keeping “Skype” and “AMC Security”).

There is no need for me for me to utilize the WordPress app on my smartphone because I have made up my mind to use my laptop computer for blogging purposes.

Apps tend to consume way too much power in the background; which causes the smartphone’s battery to be depleted at a faster rate (I shouldn’t have the cause to be charging my Android smartphone on a daily basis).

And, I only use my phone to make appointments and calls that are of an urgent nature and I do not stay long on the phone.

    Thankfully, I am not addicted.

    1. WOW! Champion status….I mean like I feel you are part of the 1% ….how many people could say they spend less than an hour on their phone. But I get what you are saying with reducing the apps that you have etc, it really frees up memory and also makes your phone last longer. Thanks for sharing 🙂

    1. 🙂 Honestly, I told some of my friends about it and how I was so intrigued by the app and they said the same thing, they would not download the app lol. I think if you don’t check then you could just assume that you use your phone for at most 1.5 hours lololol.
